9-1 Week #2: Utopia Status Updates


Amisha, Rupin, Jessica, Martin: We have finished our political system and our country charter. We have a process for passing bills and laws. We have a name: Pualani.

Nadeem, Pacifica, Karan, April: We are doing rights and freedoms of our country and our Social Programs. We have a name: Wham Cake Island.

Joey, Kate, Harris, Areeba: We are working out on our political system and we are trying to figure out rights and freedoms for our citizens. Looking at trading allies. We have a name: Vermilious.

Rebecca, Hesham, Sydney, Alex: We are focusing on economics and we are trying to sort ourselves out as we are confused as a group. But feel we have a good start on the beliefs, values and political system of our country.

Lei, Lachlan, Courtney, Simon:  We are almost done our economic systems and are getting close to being done our social systems. We have a name: Malicuria.

Shannon, Ahd, Mai-Lan, Devaughn: We have figured out our political/environment systems and are now working on our social system. We also found out what resources we need to meet our basic needs, so we are planning on discussing with other groups about trade partnerships. We have a name: Zaconda.

Lexy, Taha, Tommy, Huda: We are finishing our political system and are entering our economic system with a country charter being create, We have a name: Pazious.

Hunayn, Mara, Julia, Lynden: We are wrapping things up in the Political system and making head way in the economic system. We have a name: Kalion.

Sarah, Sabrina, Evan, Mihir: We finished our Economic discussion. We are working on our Social System and are in process of making a good country. We had decided that our country name should be Goldborne cause we have a lot of gold.

9-1 Week #1: Utopia Status Updates

Completed Student-Group Conferences to get Country updates. Here are the groups after the first week of Utopia.

Amisha, Rupin, Jessica, Martin: "We are discussing our political and economic systems--using our beliefs and values to guide our decisions."

Nadeem, Pacifica, Karan, April: "Having completed values and beliefs, we are working on political, economic, environmental systems --believe we are centre left society."

Joey, Kate, Harris, Areeba: "Poor and small country. Working on health care and education. Going back and completing and reflecting on the values and beliefs chart".

Rebecca, Hesham, Sydney, Alex: "We are having heated discussions about what our economic and political beliefs should be. We have found a compromise on what our beliefs should be or around ---we are middle left wing."

Lei, Lachlan, Courtney, Simon: "We are in the process of making a great country."


Shannon, Ahd, Mai-Lan, Devaughn: "We have the basis of our values, economic and political systems but we need to tie off a few loose ends. By a few, we mean a lot, but we got it all under control."


Lexy, Taha, Tommy, Huda: "We have completed general rules and regulations amongst our country with a light overview of vision for the future."

Hunayn, Mara, Julia, Lynden: "We are in the process of completing our political system-combination of representation of democracy and demarchy."

Sarah, Sabrina, Evan, Mihir: "We believe that our political system should be a social democracy and our economic system should be a command/mixed economy or known as socialism."


Farewell Tickets on Sale on Thursday!!!!!

Farewell tickets on sale starting Thursday, May 19 and will continue to Thursday, May 26. Cost of tickets is $35, Dinner options include A. Beef Supper or B. Vegetarian Lasagna Supper. Both meals include salad and dinner buns.

Friday: Triathlon

We will be headed to UofC on Friday for our annual Triathlon with the Grade 9 students. Students will arrive back at HDC around 2:30pm. All students need to make arrangements for transportation to get home.

  • Students need to be dressed for an active and physical day. 
  • Students need to bring snacks and lunch.
  • Students are encouraged to leave technology and valuables at home.

Collecting Items for NorthStar Ford

The North Star Ford locations in Calgary are accepting donations of bottled water, non-perishable food items, clothing and toiletries. HDC students are encouraged bring in items to support Fort McMurray Families impacted by wildfires. We will be collecting items till Wednesday, May 11.

Explore IT Field Trip to SAIT

Some of our Grade 9 girls had a chance to participate in Explore IT today. They attended several workshops learning about different careers available in the Math, Science, and Technology world. As well, participated in a keynote presentation from the organizer for Cybermentor. 

Cybermentor is an online mentoring program for girls in grades 6 to 12 across Alberta. Each girl is matched with her own carefully-screened mentor and the two connect online throughout the school year using their computers, phones or tablets. 

By chatting with their mentor through a secure site, the girls learn about the wealth of careers and opportunities in science and engineering, discover new interests and gain confidence. The mentors—inspiring women in diverse careers in science, technology, engineering and math—enjoy the experience of being a role model and motivating the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Mount Royal University Visit

The Grade Nine students had an informative and interactive presentation from Junior Achievement Southern Alberta. The presenters were from TransCanada Employees. The students learned about setting goals; career options; personal budgeting; and living on their own expenses.
